Get out of the House!

Do you ever get incredible bored being at home? Yes, modern technology has made it so we can do just about anything from home. Sometimes, it just isn’t enough. I will randomly find myself pacing the house. Sure, I could do some laundry, or vacuum. It wouldn’t be satisfying, but it would be something to do. It took me forever and three different moves to figure out how to get rid of that restless feeling.

Here are somethings to do out of the house.

1. Sporting event

There are major and minor league teams everywhere. Look up local teams and see if you can catch a game.

2. Hike

Get outside. It might take a little bit of a car/bike/bus ride but it is totally worth the peace of mind.

3. Find a new watering hole (somewhere to people watch. I am not encouraging drinking anything except water)

I found a really cool place with a pizza oven, large yard games, and they serve my favorite soda. People love to bring their 4-legged friends and the business shows off local artists. A great place to just hang and people watch or meet up with friends for a game of cornhole.

4. Find a state or national park near you and plan a trip

State and national parks might take a small fee to enter but they are usually nice places to visit. When I move, I like to research all the parks near and make a list. As I visit, I cross them off the list. Great place for picnics.

5. Walk around your neighborhood

This is a great option if you are pressed for time but are still restless in the house. It is also a good way to meet neighbors and get easy exercise.

6. See about volunteering at a local animal shelter

Local shelters often need help. If you don’t have any pets of your own, this is a great way to spend a couple of hours with animals that are always in need of attention and affection.

7. Go to the local library

You might not be an avid reader, and that is perfectly fine. Take the time to go to the library for a change of scene. Free events that are happening are often posted at libraries and might give you an idea for the next time you want to get out of the house.

8. Local theater

The local theater is a great way to see plays or shows without paying the high cost of going to the big theater in the next town over. They often host improve nights which are fun to watch.

9. Find a gallery

In the last year art has taken off! I know in my town there are a bunch of new galleries. It’s really nice to go in and appreciate someone’s work. You never know, a piece might really call to you.

10. Find local gardens

I love botanical gardens. My town doesn’t have any, but they do have community gardens and nature preserves with great walking paths. It’s fun to see what greenery is native.

11. Go to the museum

Museums are preserving the history in the area. There are usually guided and unguided tours. You might learn something extra on the guided tour, but wandering at your own pace can be just as nice.

12. Go star gazing

If you have a day where you know you can be up late, pack blankets, pillows, and a warm beverage (I always grab mint tea) and look up some place that is removed from the city lights and go look at stars. If you really want to plan ahead, look up when the next meteor shower is and plan to go on that day. Putting some distance between yourself and your every day can be very beneficial and relaxing.

There are tons of things to do when you get restless at home. It isn’t easy to always do it and there can be things that get in your way, like having to do something solo. But it can also be a great way to make connections and friendships. If you are worried about doing something solo, see if you can find a local Facebook group that does that activity and meet someone (SAFELY) to do that activity.
